Elephants Moved from Maine Doing Well in Oklahoma

HUGO, Okla. - Rosie and Opal, the retired circus elephants who had come to Hope, Maine, are settling back into their old home in Hugo, Oklahoma, following the tragic accident that led to the death of their Maine caretaker, Jim Laurita.

Sjonna Paulson, a spokesperson for the Endangered Ark Foundation in Oklahoma, says the elephants are doing well, and were greeted with a treat of fruit and vegetables when they arrived. The pair were also able to reunite with members of their old herd.

Jim Laurita had brought the elephants to his sanctuary in Hope in 2011. He was killed a week ago when he fell during routine caretaking and was accidentally crushed in the elephant enclosure. Paulson says the Endangered Ark Foundation was glad to be able to step in and help the elephants Laurita loved.
