Rockland Ceremony Honors WWI Veterans

ROCKLAND, Maine - Among the Veterans Day events taking place Tuesday is a special ceremony in Rockland to honor two young men from Maine who perished in World War I.

Pfc. Arthur E. Winslow died of his wounds on July 6, 1918. The previous month, 2nd Lt. Albert D. Holbrook died as a prisoner of war, also as a result of his wounds.

Holbrook's niece, Gaye Best, says her uncle - who dropped out of Bowdoin College to enlist - was captured after being severely injured in battle.

"It's important to remember every single veteran, and to make sure that their sacrifices, and the sacrifices of their families, are never forgotten," Best says.

The ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Winslow-Holbrook Memorial Park in Rockland.
