AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ A Maine Democratic senator is making another attempt this session to prohibit minors from indoor tanning.
Sen. Geoff Gratwick's bill was approved by the Health and Human Services Committee in a 7-4 vote. It would ban anyone under 18 from using tanning beds or booths.
The bill now heads to the full Legislature.
A similar bill sponsored by Gratwick in 2013 was vetoed by Republican Gov. Paul LePage. He said that the proposed law was an overreach of government.
Gratwick says lawmakers have the responsibility to do everything they can to protect children against skin cancer. He says that 9 states currently have indoor tanning bans for minors on the books.
