Officials: 35 Maine Correctional Workers to Lose Jobs

CHARLESTON, Maine - Officials say dozens of people are losing their jobs at a youth correctional facility in central Maine.

Maine Corrections Commissioner Joseph Fitzpatrick tells WABI-TV that 35 people will lose their jobs over the next several months at Mountain View Youth Development Center.

He says the layoffs are due to a steady decrease in the number of incarcerated juveniles.

There were only nine youths at Mountain View, which has about 140 beds. They have been since reloacted to a Portland facility.

Mountain View, which will soon become a prison for adults only, is located in Charleston, about 25 miles northwest of Bangor.

Fitzpatrick met with staff, administration and union representatives at the facility on Thursday. The center will now focus on specialized adult programs such as treating substance abuse.
