FRYEBURG, Maine — Police say engine failure caused an aircraft to make an emergency landing in a wooded area in Maine.
Police chief Joshua Potvin says the plane crashed into trees near Porter Road in Fryeburg Sunday evening as the pilot tried to land at the Eastern Slopes Regional Airport.
Potvin says the Media, Pennsylvania man noticed that his engine was failing around 6 p.m. after taking off from Leavitt Airport in Albany, New Hampshire.
The 56-year-old man deployed the ultralight aircraft's parachute system, which slowed his descent but didn't stop him from crash landing in trees just west of the airport runway.
Potvin says the pilot was "extremely fortunate" to escape the incident without injury. He did not release the man's name.
