Somerset County Jail Didn't Follow Policy in Inmate's Death

MADISON, Maine - A Maine Department of Corrections report states that staff at the Somerset County Jail didn't follow protocol during the May 2014 death of an inmate.

The Morning Sentinel reports that the Maine attorney general's office is continuing to conduct a criminal investigation into the death of Joseph Daoust, who was found unresponsive by guards before being pronounced dead.

The report citing failures in assessment and response was based on a review of surveillance video, inmate files, jail unit logs and incident reports. Any discipline resulting from the report will be handled by the county sheriff's office.

The report was completed in June 2014 and released to the newspaper last week following a Freedom of Access Act request.
