Auburn Lays Off Five Including Fire Chief

AUBURN, Maine_ The City of Auburn is laying off its fire chief and several other positions as it prepares a budget for the next fiscal year. Current Fire Chief Frank Roma was let go on Friday, with other layoffs effective by the end of June.

Auburn city manager Howard Kroll said in a memo Friday that the layoffs are necessary in order to tackle financial problems which haven't been solved by freezing hires and expenditures.

Kroll outlines the details in his FY17  budget plan, which goes to the Auburn City Council Monday to be taken up at a special council meeting at 5:30 PM.
