MACHIAS, Maine (AP) _ Downeast Maine's annual celebration of the salmon migration is set to begin in Machias.
The 4th Annual Smolt Bolt and Bloater Bash will take place at the East Machias Aquatic Research Center on Saturday.
The race celebrates the migration of young Atlantic salmon from Maine's fresh waters to the ocean.
The race starts at 10 a.m. on Sunrise Trail in Machias and follows a section along the river to the research center.
The center will then host its ``bloater bash,'' in which whole alewife herring are smoked for eating. There will also be tours of the center's hatchery throughout the day.
