Vessel That Went Missing Off Mount Desert Island Found Off New York, Crew Not In Distress

The Coast Guard says a sailboat that it has been searching for in the waters off Mount Desert Island since Saturday has been located and is not in distress.

The Dove was located 96 nautical miles south of Montauk, New York, at about 3 p.m. Monday, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicole Groll.

Groll says the search for the Dove began after a 911 call was made from one of three people aboard, but was cut off abruptly. She says it’s unclear why the 911 call was made.

“All distress calls, whether made on accident or not, are going to activate a search,” she says.

Groll says it’s important when embarking on a boat trip to inform others of your route and final destination.

“It helps start a search, it helps give us an area to search,” she says.

Groll says the Coast Guard is working to set up a face-to-face meeting with the crew of the Dove.
