Backers Of Plan To Build Giant Salmon Farm In Belfast To Meet Public

BELFAST, Maine - City officials and the people who want to bring one of the largest inland salmon farming operations in the world to Maine are meeting with local residents to talk about the project.

Nordic Aquafarms, of Fredrikstad, Norway, wants to build a 40-acre salmon farm in Belfast capable of producing more than 60 million pounds of fish per year. The company will join city officials for a public information session on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast.

Belfast officials say the meeting is not a hearing but a question-and-answer session.

The operation would be housed in land-based tanks. Salmon aquaculture in Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, relies heavily on a different model that uses pens in the marine environment. Nordic hopes to be in production by 2020.
