Starting Monday, tenants having trouble paying their rent due to hardship caused by COVID-19 can apply for assistance with their December rent.
It’s a $6.2 million extension of a rent relief program managed by MaineHousing, and fueled by federal COVID-19 relief funds.
The state says, since April, $28.4 million in federal relief funds have gone to assist Maine renters.
This latest allocation can be used to cover up to $1,000 of a person’s October, November and now December rent, as long as funds last.
Grants are made on a first come, first served basis.
MaineHousing says it has assisted more than 14,000 renters with funds since the program’s creation.
