Former University of Maine basketball star Cindy Blodgett has been hired as assistant coach of the Boston University women's basketball team.
Blodgett's appointment was announced today by newly-hired head coach Katy Steding, who was Blodgett's teammate with the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs team during the 2000 season.
Blodgett was a four-time All-American honoree at UMaine, where she was later hired to coach the women's team. Four years later, Blodgett was fired by the school's then-new athletic director, Steve Abbott. She coached the BU Terriers for the 1999-2000 season and went on to a four-year tour in the WNBA.
"I am excited and humbled to welcome Cindy back into the Boston University family," Steding says, in a statement. "With her elite experience as a player and coach, Cindy is a great fit for me and this team. Moreover, she is a person of great character and will be a terrific mentor and role model for the young women we lead."
In 2005, Blodgett joined the Brown University staff as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator. Most recently, she served as an assistant coach at Rhode Island from 2011-14.
