Bath Viaduct Replacement Project to Start This Spring

BATH, Maine — A $15 million project to replace an elevated roadway in Bath is scheduled to start this spring.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Maine Department of Transportation officials confirmed the Bath Viaduct project will start in May. Full reconstruction is expected to begin in October.

The bridgelike structure on Route 1 carries traffic over parts of Bath’s downtown and the Bath Iron Works shipyard. MDOT engineers say the viaduct’s roadway and supporting piers are worn out.

A contractor will demolish the two-lane highway bridge, the superstructure and the piers that support it. It will then be rebuilt.

MDOT spokesman Ted Talbot says the viaduct won’t be fully closed until October 2016.
