On her seventeenth birthday, Ernestine Ashworth yearns for an extraordinary life. In a flash, she’s 18, then 40, then 73 and with the passing of each year her dreams and her aspirations are transformed by the shifting tides of her changing world. The Deer Isle Granite Museum on Stonington's Main Street will host an opening reception and gallery talk for a new rotating exhibit on Thursday, July 11, at 7 p.m. “Images of Stonington’s Past: Early Twentieth Century Photography by Josephine Ginn Banks” is a collaboration with the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath and features a selection of large format, glass plate negative prints from its collection. The images bring to vivid life Stonington’s 19th century village and stonecutting culture during the period when its famed granite industry was in full bloom. Catherine Cyr, Associate Curator at Maine Maritime Museum, will present a gallery talk on Banks and her photographs during the opening reception.
Puppets in Portland (aka PiP), is a city-wide festival of international puppetry in Portland, Maine produced by Mayo Street Arts. Over a dozen of professional puppeteers, animation technicians, theater professionals, and sound designers from around the globe gather to be a part of PiP. Guest artists will present performances and hands-on workshops appealing to a diverse audience with opportunities for children, seniors, & everyone in between. Networking and artistic development for puppetry professionals, hobbyists, and the puppet-curious will be offered as part of PiP.
PiP 2024 will feature style-defying executions of the puppetry’s diverse sub-genres, including mask work, paper arts, and shadow. The performances encompass a compelling gamut of topics ranging from personal histories to uncharted planet sci-fi survival and an opportunity to be puppeteers-for-a-day in PiP PiP Parade!

Live performance, shadow puppetry and marionettes shine to delightful effect in a production that is “Achingly beautiful...” (Maryland Theatre Guide) and “...amusing, charming, delightful and, at times, utterly and completely astonishing” (DC Theatre Scene).An astronaut traveling 87,000 light years into space crash-lands on an uncharted planet where she must resort to emergency measures to seek rescue. Every first Saturday of the month, join Carolyn Rapkievian and the Kotwica Band at the MDI YWCA for an evening of community folk dancing. Acadia Community Theater presents “Songs From the Stage: a Musical Showcase” at the Northeast Harbor Marina on Friday, September 20th from 7 - 8:30 pm. This is a free event, open to the public.
