Jun 05 Monday
Please join us for Exploring Women’s History Through Folk Songs with historian and singer Diane Taraz on Monday, June 5th at 2 p.m. at Lunt Auditorium (74 Lunt Road, Falmouth, ME).
Diane Taraz will take you on a fascinating trip back in time, through some of the most beautiful and compelling songs ever created. In period dress, she explores the daily lives of women in Europe and America from about 1500 to 1850 by singing the songs they used to speed their work, lift their spirits, or ease an aching heart. The songs are lively, funny, bawdy, tragic, passionate, or serene – little time capsules that give us a glimpse into the lives and thoughts of generations of women who left behind few records. Audiences are often surprised at the songs‘ direct approach to delicate topics and the way attitudes expressed in the songs echo down the years to affect our lives today.
For decades, Diane Taraz has been writing her own songs and breathing new life into traditional ones. Her elegant voice brings out the essence of whatever style she presents, be it folk, jazz, blues, or standards. She has made over 20 solo albums. Steeped in history, Diane creates programs that use the music of an era to show the inner lives of people who lived long ago. She has directed the Lexington Historical Society’s Colonial Singers for 12 years, and she is on the Scholarly Advisory Board of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History based in New York City. She just published a book, Candace – Imagining the Life of a Woman Enslaved in 18th-Century New England, available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other outlets.
This program is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
Masks are optional for those who are fully vaccinated.

Repertoire ranges from the elegant to the playful, and from 1651 to the present. Class taught by dancing master Robb Spivey. This chart-topping Celtic powerhouse has risen to the top of Billboard’s world music charts 7 times in the #1 spot! They’ve been out on the road for more than 20 years, routinely selling out houses large and small – after being seen by millions as the Irish band playing to the steerage passengers in the movie Titanic. They first appeared at the Opera House during a blizzard in 2007 and their storm here has never ended. It’s always a blast to have Gaelic Storm in the House. Join us tonight as we kick off the summer of 2023!
