AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ A Maine man charged with killing and dismembering his father is set to appear in court so a judge can determine if he is competent to stand trial.
Twenty-five-year-old Leroy Smith III was scheduled to appear in Kennebec County Superior Court on Monday. He is charged with the May death of 56-year-old Leroy Smith Jr. inside an apartment they shared. An earlier evaluation found that Smith was not competent.
Police have said Smith killed his father by stabbing him in the neck and using knives to chop up his body before burying him in the woods.
In a police affidavit, Smith said he committed the crime because his father sexually assaulted him throughout his life.
