Arrestees At Governor's Mansion Want To Go To Trial

More than a dozen people arrested at the Maine governor's mansion for trespassing this spring could have their cases go to trial.

The Kennebec Journal reports that a majority of the arrestees who are free on bail want to go to trial.

Individuals who are part of the national Poor People's Campaign were arrested in May when they were ordered to leave the Blaine House but refused to do so. The campaign aims to challenge racism, poverty, militarism and ecological devastation and says it sponsored such protests in more than 40 state capitols.

Those arrested include 59-year-old Sharon Sandstrum, who decided not to contest the charge and received a $100 fine.

Attorney Logan Perkins is representing the remaining 15 defendants and says she'll request the state handle the cases together.
