PORTLAND, Maine — Maine's season for hunting deer with muzzleloaders is underway.
The statewide muzzleloader season begins Monday and ends Saturday. A more restricted season begins Dec. 8 and ends Dec. 13. That season is limited to 14 of the state's 29 wildlife management districts. The restriction prohibits hunting in much of northern Maine.
Muzzleloaders are guns that are loaded from the open end of the barrel. Some are antiques and others more modern. Their users have a separate season from Maine's general firearms season for deer, which ended Nov. 29.
Maine's expanded archery season for deer is also ongoing and ends Dec. 13. Monday also marks the beginning of the hunting season for bobcats, which ends on Feb. 14.
