WINDHAM, Maine - The window of a man who was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy in Maine is planning to sue for $2 million.
The Portland Press Herald reports that Vicki McKenney filed a notice of claim against the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Nicholas Mangino and the Windham Police Department.
Mangino fatally shot Stephen McKenney in April after he refused to drop a handgun he was carrying. Vicki McKenney called police to say her husband was suicidal.
The claim says the police actions were "reckless'' and that McKenney posed no threat when he was shot.
A lawyer representing the Cumberland County Sherriff's Department said the claim "omits important facts'' and appears to be an "attempt to arouse and excite the general public's emotions.''
