Officials: Charges Coming to Landlord in Portland Fire

PORTLAND, Maine - Maine fire officials say investigators have met with a district attorney to discuss possible charges against the owner of a Portland building where six people died in a November fire.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental. Portland officials forwarded the case to the Cumberland County district attorney because they believed owner Gregory Nisbet operated the property as an illegal rooming house. The Portland Press Herald reports Maine Fire Marshal Joe Thomas says "there was a very good likelihood'' the district attorney could find some criminality in the case.

Nisbet and District Attorney Stephanie Anderson did not immediately return a reporter's phone call. Portland Acting Deputy Chief for Fire Prevention Keith Gautreau told a city committee on Tuesday that the district attorney "will be proceeding with some prosecution.''
