Collecting a 'World of Change' to Help Maine Communities

BANGOR, Maine - With Americans sitting on an estimated $10 billion in loose change, a new Maine nonprofit is hoping to get those coins circulating again - and get more people involved in projects that will help their communities.

It's called World of Change.

"This is a vision that I've had that I'm super excited to finally be able to see it through," says Matt Hoidal,  of Falmouth.

World of Change, he says, is both literally and symbolically focused on "change" by encouraging folks to give what they can to help communities. The group's focus will be on the welfare of children.

"So whether or not we have kids, or whether on not we're teachers of kids, the reality is they are our future," Hoidal says, "and our community depends on the ability for us to help kids thrive."

Hoidal says World of Change will focus on six areas: education, health, housing, financial literacy, food security, and playtime. The group will spotlight projects that address those issues, and raise funds and matching money.

The group is also hoping Mainers will set a world record this fall, when World of Change attempts to collect the biggest pile of coins the world has ever seen.
