Maine GOP Promotes Party Unity After Primary

Jay Field

BANGOR, Maine (AP) _ After a bruising congressional primary, Maine Republicans are promoting party unity as they look to reclaim the 2nd District seat and maintain control of the governor's office this November.

At an event in Bangor on Friday, Sen. Susan Collins said Republicans must rally around the common theme of job creation and improving the economy.

Bruce Poliquin, the former state treasurer who defeated Kevin Raye for the 2nd District nomination on Tuesday, touted his business experience as something that can resonate with Democrats and independents.

Poliquin will take on state Sen. Emily Cain for the seat in the vast rural district that has been held by a Democrat for nearly 20 years. U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud is leaving to challenge Gov. Paul LePage for governor.
