AUGUSTA, Maine - State election officials are rolling out what they say is a new and improved way for people with disabilities to mark ballots.
The ExpressVote system consists of a single unit with a video display screen, built-in ballot printer and attached controller that has uniquely shaped and colored buttons with Braille labels.
The device offers both audio and visual ballots.
Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap says when a voter is finished making selections the system prints a ballot marked with the voter's choices.
"One of the reasons why we selected this product was because the users really liked it. they like using it," Dunlap says. "It was intuitive. it was simple and it still produces a paper ballot, which is what we count on for things like recounts."
Dunlap says the new accessible voting devices will make their debut at the primaries in June.
