Amid Economic Gloom, Some Good News in Aroostook County

ASHLAND, Maine -- Maine independent U.S. Senator Angus King says the announcement that Verso Paper would soon be closing it's Bucksport mill made for a tough day yesterday in Maine

But he says that today has been a great one for Aroostook County, with three companies celebrating the opening of new facilities. "Well over a hundred jobs and more to come," he said, "a lot of optimism. a beautiful fall day with a blue sky."

King joined officials with the Ecoshel company in Ashland today. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to begin making exterior cedar shingles at the former Levesque sawmill.

King also was also on hand as Re-Energy flipped the switch to officially restart it's biomass to electricity facility in Ashland. He also attended the grand opening of the Irving Woodlands sawmill in Nashville Plantation.

Ed is a Maine native who spent his early childhood in Livermore Falls before moving to Farmington. He graduated from Mount Blue High School in 1970 before going to the University of Maine at Orono where he received his BA in speech in 1974 with a broadcast concentration. It was during that time that he first became involved with public broadcasting. He served as an intern for what was then called MPBN TV and also did volunteer work for MPBN Radio.
