Laid-off Maine Mill Workers to Receive Aid

AUGUSTA, Maine - More than 500 Maine mill workers who are soon being laid off will be able to receive training for a new job and other assistance.

Maine's U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said Monday that the Department of Labor approved the request for Trade Adjustment Assistance for the workers of the Verso Paper Company's Bucksport Mill, which is slated for closure on Dec. 1.

The workers there will receive job training, income support as well as relocation services if they find a job that's beyond their normal commuting area.

The senators say the assistance will be critical to the hundreds of workers that are losing their jobs "as they pursue alternative job opportunities.''

The company announced the mill's closure last month, saying it hasn't been profitable in years.
