Maine Judge Upholds Manslaughter Conviction

PARIS, Maine (AP) _ A judge has upheld the vehicular manslaughter conviction of a Maine woman accused of being drunk and reading a text message at the time of a double-fatal car crash.

Jurors acquitted 21-year-old Kristina Lowe of West Paris of drunken driving in May but returned guilty verdicts for manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.

The Sun Journal said a judge on Tuesday dismissed motions for a new trial, mistrial or acquittal.

Defense lawyer James Howaniec said he'll decide after sentencing whether to file another appeal.

Two passengers were killed in the crash early on Jan. 7, 2012, in Paris. The then-18-year-old Lowe and another passenger were injured. Her father testified she told him that she'd looked at her phone when she lost control of the vehicle.
