Former State Lawmaker Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges

PORTLAND, Maine - A former state lawmaker who previously went to prison for equity skimming has pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting visa and marriage fraud and to making false statements.

Adam Mack of Portland on Monday became the fifth person to plead guilty to federal charges stemming from illegal efforts to help two women become green card holders. According to court records, he engaged in marriage and visa fraud and made false statements regarding his employment of them.

The 39-year-old Mack, a Republican member of the House from 1997 to 2000, was sentenced in 2013 to six months for improperly spending money used to secure federally subsidized loans.

No sentencing date has been set. The visa fraud violation carries a maximum 10-year sentence, while the others carry a maximum five-year sentence.
