Jury Deliberations Begin in Shooting at Beekeeping Business

PORTLAND, Maine - A jury has begun deliberations in the trial of Maine lobsterman who fatally shot another man during a confrontation at a beekeeping business in North Yarmouth.

The prosecutor told jurors Tuesday that Merrill "Mike'' Kimball had a concealed handgun and an extra clip of ammunition because he expected trouble when he and his wife went to the bee farm in October 2013. The defense said Kimball was defending himself after the victim attacked him and used his larger size to intimidate.

Police say Kimball shot 63-year-old Leon Kelley three times.

Kelley's father-in-law is owner of the business. Kimball's wife worked there and was retrieving about 700 pounds honey she'd harvested when the confrontation took place.
