Williams Does Not Testify At Hearing In Sheriff's Deputy Case

PORTLAND, Maine - A hearing for a Maine man who wants his confession to killing a sheriff's deputy tossed out has ended without him taking the stand.Defense attorney Verne Paradie said there was no need for John Williams to give a firsthand account because he was recently examined by a forensic psychologist who testified Monday.

The defense contends Williams was beaten and kicked, and was tired and hungry, when he confessed to the April 25 killing Somerset County Cpl. Eugene Cole in Norridgewock.

Cole was the first police officer to be killed in the line of duty in nearly 30 years in Maine. Williams allegedly told police he "eliminated'' the deputy because he was angry with him for arresting his fiancee a few days earlier. He's due to stand trial in June.
