PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A family will be reunited with a deceased relative's long lost Purple Heart medal in a Maine ceremony.
Boston native Sgt. James Hanlon served in the Army in World War II and died in combat during Operation Torch in Algeria in 1942. He was awarded the Purple Heart, a decoration for those hurt or killed while serving.
A niece of Hanlon's widow's second husband found the medal in 2003 while moving the widow into an assisted living facility. She later contacted Purple Hearts Reunited, which reconnects families with lost Purple Hearts. The group found Hanlon's nieces in Maine and will present the medal to the family on Sunday in Harrison.
Hanlon's body was returned to America in 1949 and is buried in Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
