Navy Awards $100M Contract to Maine Shipyard

BATH, Maine (AP) _ Maine's Bath Iron Works has ended a partnership in which it helped to produce the Navy's Littoral Combat Ship in 2010. But that doesn't mean it's out of the program altogether.

The shipyard announced Monday that the Navy has awarded the shipbuilder $100 million to provide maintenance and modernization support for both versions of the speedy warship.

Bath Iron Works is the prime contractor for the engineering and planning work. Partners include shipbuilders Austal USA in Alabama and Marinette Marine Corp. in Wisconsin.

The Maine shipyard and Austal USA originally teamed to build an all-aluminum trimaran version of the ship but ended the partnership in 2010. Marinette Marine was lead yard on a steel single-hull version. Both ships can top 50 mph and are designed to operate in coastal waters.
