Home Depot Breach Puts Mainers' Data at Risk

As officials with Home Depot scramble to find out what happened following a massive data breach which likely came from their nationwide chain of DIY stores, the Portland Press Herald is reporting that some 52,000 Maine-based card numbers have been put up for sale in Russia as part of that data theft.

But Maine Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection superintendent William Lund told the paper that consumers should not panic. Lund is advising people to check their statements carefully and report any discrepancies.

Some tens of millions of card numbers were likely stolen nationwide. It's just the latest in a string of retail data breaches, which have included Target and Shaw's.
