AUGUSTA, Maine -- Gov. Paul LePage was the principal speaker today at the annual Christmas wreath laying ceremony in the State House Hall of Flags.
LePage praised the efforts of Wreaths Across America, which was started in Maine, to place wreaths on every headstone at Arlington National Cemetery, and at veterans cemeteries in all 50 states and elsewhere.
"It's about the remembering, honoring and the teaching of our youth," LePage said. "And so, as a convoy heads down, they're going to make many, many stops along the way to schools and civic organizations."
A convoy carrying 200,000 wreaths, destined for Arlington, left Maine escorted by Patriot Guard Riders and first lady Ann LePage.
All told, Wreaths Across America expects to exceed last year's shipments of 540,000 wreaths to adorn veterans' graves in hundreds of locations in the U.S. and overseas.
