Skowhegan Lawmaker Proposes Bond to Improve Stream Crossings

AUGUSTA, Maine - House majority Leader Jeff McCabe, a Democrat from Skowhegan, is proposing a bond issue to help towns replace old culverts and stream crossings.

McCabe says too often towns simply replace them without planning to handle heavy storm damage that is occurring more frequently.

"All too often, when we are trying to do projects such as culverts and stream crossings and things, we are under-sizing them," McCabe says, "and are not prepared for the weather that New England is facing."

McCabe says right sizing projects should reduce damage caused by severe weather.

He is discussing his proposal with municipal officials before finalizing the bill and determining how large a bond to propose.

Bond issues require a two-thirds vote of both branches of the Legislature, and the approval of the voters at referendum.
