Officials Identify Vermont Fishermen Who Died at Sea

YORK, Maine Authorities have identified the Vermont man who died at sea about 13 miles off York Harbor, Maine.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources on Friday identified the man as 59-year-old Forest Woodruff of Jamaica, Vermont. The vessel's owner, 57-year-old Russell Smith, also of Jamaica, notified the Coast Guard of the death.

An initial Coast Guard investigation found that the two dropped anchor Wednesday night after the 28-foot Sea Bird had engine problems. The Maine Marine Patrol says Smith awoke the next morning to find his fellow fisherman dead near the open engine compartment.

Lt. Scott McCann, a Coast Guard spokesman, said Friday that an investigation is being conducted by the Coast Guard, Maine Marine Patrol and other law enforcement agencies. He said there's nothing indicating the death was suspicious.
