Crowdfunded Kidney Transplant Surgery Completed at Maine Medical Center

PORTLAND, Maine - Officials at a Maine hospital say doctors at the facility have completed an organ transplant procedure involving a man who saw a woman's plea for a kidney posted on her car.

Maine Medical Center spokesman Matt Paul says the doctors completed the living kidney donation from Joshua Dall-Leighton of Windham to Christine Royles of South Portland on Tuesday. Paul says the hospital is grateful for Dall-Leighton's donation and that the case "enhanced awareness of the need for living donors.''

The surgery was delayed because of crowd-funded donations aimed at defraying Dall-Leighton's expenses. Hospital officials said before the procedure was scheduled that they needed time to determine if the donations violated the National Organ Transplant Act. The act forbids potential donors from profiting from a donation.
