AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Maine wildlife officials are collecting the last of the applications to participate in the state's upcoming antlerless deer hunting permit lottery.
Monday is the final day to submit paper applications to participate in the season, which begins with Youth Deer Hunting Day on Oct. 24. The applications are due in person or by mail by 5 p.m. to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Online applications for the upcoming season are due by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 17.
The lottery is free and the drawing is set for Sept. 9. Maine uses the antlerless deer permits to manage the deer population by controlling the harvest of females. The main firearms season for deer runs from Nov. 2 to Nov. 28.
