PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ The busiest part of Maine's annual fall deer hunt is getting underway with ``resident only'' day.
Resident only day is on Saturday, which is also resident only day for moose hunting. The firearms season for deer fully begins on Monday and lasts until Nov. 28.
Maine is issuing 28,770 deer hunting permits, down from 37,185 permits last year. Harsh winter weather culled the population in some parts of the state.
Most of the archery season for deer ended on Friday, although there is still archery allowed in some areas until Dec. 12.
