Maine Group Releases Plan for Increasing Access to Local Food
PORTLAND, Maine - Maine Food Strategy has released a blueprint for strengthening the state's local food economy. The organization's project director, Tanya Swain, says Maine has a strong local food movement, but there are challenges, such as farmers' wages.
"Some of those numbers are pretty stagnant," Swain says. "So the question is: OK, this is great that we have all of this local food, but how do we make food production so it's a sustainable business opportunity for more people?"
The blueprint, called "Framework," outlines five goals that range from increasing market share of local foods to increasing access for food insecure individuals.
