UMaine's College Radio Station Off-Air Due To January Fire

ORONO, Maine - A fire has knocked the University of Maine's college radio station off the airways.

Officials say a cooling system failure caused the radio station's transmitter in Old Town to catch fire in January, destroying nearly every piece of equipment inside. WMEB station manager Gabriel Blanchard tells WABI-TV the station has been operating as normal while off the air for the past month.

Blanchard says the station is still reviewing music and training DJs. Regular WMEB shows are also streaming online.

Senior Associate Dean of Students at UMaine Kenda Scheele says advisers have told her they may be able to get the station back on the air through a backup transmitter.

The university says it hopes to move forward with a restoration plan in coming weeks.
