State Computers Should Be Restored Quickly, Following Phishing Attack

The Maine Secretary of State's office says computer services should be restored Thursday, following aphishing attack discovered on office computers Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say cybersecurity measures put in place by the Maine Office of Information Technology and quick action taken by Information Services personnel reduced the effect of the attack, which could have been much more serious.

Staff computers in the Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions were affected. This was expected to slow down response to public inquiries in that Bureau Thursday.

“One of the things we really want to stress is that it did not compromise any public data so, really, the only effect on the public is some inconvenience in dealing with doing CEC business,” says Secretary of State spokesperson Kristen Muszynski.

Muszynski says the attack consisted of 1,600 emails but only 18 actually got through to state employee inboxes.
