Bangor Priest Fired After Investigation By Portland Diocese

PORTLAND, Maine - The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland has fired a Maine priest who was criticized by a judge who said he "inflamed" events that led to a woman's murder in 2018. The Portland Press Herald reports that Rev. Anthony Cipolle of Bangor was Renee Henneberry Clark's spiritual advisor and was criticized after her death by Superior Court Justice William Stokes.

The diocese determined after an investigation that Cipolle abused his position, violated the Diocese of Portland's Code of Ethics, and attempted to mislead investigators.

Cipolle denied the allegation Sunday and said that the diocese has treated him unfairly. He says he plans to challenge the decision through the church's court system.
