UMaine System Implements Restrictions, Makes Changes To Calendar To Limit COVID-19 Spread
In order to limit the spread of COVID-19, the University of Maine System is setting up an online database to show COVID-19 testing results for staff and students. New travel restrictions and revisions to the academic calendar are also being adopted.
Chancellor Dannel Malloy says the changes are intended to discourage students from traveling outside of Maine.
“Spring break, which we've eliminated for the spring semester, is that classical American time when students leave campuses, many of them travelling, if not back to their home states, to other states.”
The University of Maine System also announced Thursday that it is reducing room and board by 20% for the Fall semester. That is to compensate students for the previously announced decision to close residence halls to most students during the Thanksgiving holiday. The rest of the semester will be completed remotely.
