Maine Politician Organizes Pro-Darren Wilson Event

WATERVILLE, Maine - A city council candidate in a Maine city says he organized downtown rallies in support of the white police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, in August.

The Morning Sentinel reports that Waterville candidate Jibryne Karter III says the rallies are "about the right to be innocent until proven guilty.'' He also says the event is unconnected to his campaign.

Michael Brown's Aug. 9 death prompted protests and sparked a national debate about police brutality. The circumstances of Darren Wilson's shooting of Brown are in dispute.

Demonstrators in Waterville have paced sidewalks at the intersection of Main and Elm streets this week and declined to say who organized the rally. Karter then posted a YouTube video identifying himself as the organizer.
