WASHINGTON - Maine 1st District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, says reauthorization of the child nutrition law will be one of her major priorities this year.
Pingree says there's an opportunity to improve a law that has been very important in addressing food security for children, and helping local farmers.
"Looking for things that will create more opportunities for local farmers, for many of our school lunch programs in a state like mine," Pingree says, "where the people, the food systems, really want to purchase more local foods, more healthier foods."
Pingree serves on the subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee that deals with agriculture measures, and is worried about efforts to roll back the program. She says there will be a bipartisan effort to complete the child nutrition re-authorization legislation this year.
