Maine's U.S. House Reps Oppose Keystone Pipeline

WASHINGTON - Both of Maine's two Democratic members of Congress voted against legislation allowing the construction of the Keystone Pipeline, which would transport oil from Canada to Midwest and Gulf Coast refineries in the United States. First District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree.

"There are big concerns about both the environmental issues around the extracting of the tar sands," says 1st District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, "but also this is, basically, a pipeline to take this oil out of the country."

Pingree says Congress has many issues to deal with in the post-election session, but politics is still dominating the agenda. She points out that the House-passed bill is sponsored by Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy, of Louisiana, who is in a run-off election with Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu. Landrieu is sponsoring her own bill to allow the pipeline.
