AUGUSTA, Maine — Adoptive families from across Maine gathered in the State House Hall of Flags to kick of Maine's participation in National Adoption Month.
Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew says there are hundreds of children in Maine that would love to be adopted.
"Please spread the word that there are children in Maine and certainly across the country that need safe, loving and nurturing homes," she says. "Encourage your friends, families and colleagues to consider adoption."
Mayhew told the group that one of the most rewarding things she does as commissioner is sign the legal paperwork for children in state care to be adopted by a family.
"This job can be extremely challenging, but I can say without hesitation that one of the most enjoyable aspects of my job is when I have the opportunity to sign adoption papers," she says.
