Maine Gov. Paul LePage is backing a Republican effort to nominate President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

LePage and six other governors signed a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee praising the president's ongoing efforts to denuclearize North Korea.

The campaign is organized by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, who wrote that the Trump's outreach to the reclusive North Korean regime was "an unprecedented victory for global peace and security."

The letter goes on to say that the president's efforts have put the Korean peninsula on the precipice of peace.

LePage and the governors who signed the letter are well-known Trump supporters. Gov. LePage introduced the president at two rallies held in Maine prior to his 2016 election victory.

Since then, the governor has outwardly embraced a president frequently criticized for polarizing statements and disparaging political foes, yet embraced by others for his unorthodox governing style - traits also associated with LePage's two terms as governor.
