The Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta has received federal approval to operate a 24-bed residential substance use disorder treatment program for veterans. Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden, of Maine’s 2nd District, says that currently Maine veterans often have to travel out of state for substance use disorder treatment.
"They would have to go to the closest VA facilities which are in Massachusetts, Connecticut, or even as far away as New York. Which was really a barrier to getting some veterans to come forward for the care they need."
Construction of the 24-bed facility at Togus will begin next year, and the first patients will be accepted in 2022.
