Unions Evaluate Fairpoint Final Offer

Unions representing more than 1,700 FairPoint Communications workers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are continuing to evaluate a contract imposed by the company.

FairPoint announced Thursday that it had reached an impasse with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Communication Workers of America.

The company proceeded to impose its final offer, which it said is permitted under federal law. The unions have accused the company of violating federal labor law and have asked the National Labor Relations Board to reinstate the old contract.

What's next is unclear going into the holiday weekend. The union has advised its members to be on standby for a possible strike or lockout.
